Robert A. Hefner III began The Hefner Collection in 1985. Today, the internationally recognized collection of Chinese contemporary and modern oil paintings is the single most important private collection representing art of the Post-Cultural Revolution period. The website, first launched in November 2001, was reorganized in September 2006 to focus exclusively on the activities of The Hefner Collection and Robert and MeiLi Hefner as collectors and philanthropists.

Hefner III's hard covered book The Grand Energy Transition: The Rise of Energy Gases, Sustainable LIfe and Growth, and the Next Great Economic Expansion was published by Wiley & Sons in September 2009; the book describes civilization's ongoing energy transition into The Age of Energy Gases and offers policy recommendations to accelerate the process. Hefner calls this transition from inefficient and polluting 19th and 20th century solid and liquid fuels to clean, highly efficient 21st century gaseous fuels the Grand Energy Transition and considers the GET to be a one-time evolutionary step for humankind from unsustainable to sustainable life and growth on Earth. A documentary DVD -- The Grand Energy Transition -- was released in April 2012. The documentary was produced by Academy Award winning producer Gray Frederickson and directed by Emmy award winning director/writer Greg Mellott.
